Notes From the Fort is a series of performance installations that create intimate places in unfamiliar environments through the play act of fort building. Using only existing structures and a suitcase full of hand-crafted materials, each fort is constructed, inhabited, noted and dismantled in a live poetic document of sense of place and the origins of home.
The NFTF series of live writing was created by Michelle Elrick in 2012 and launched in Reykjavik, Iceland that same year. Over the next two years, Elrick used the fort as a way of retracing her families’ emmigrations and her own transient young adulthood by extending the project to sites in Scotland, Austria, France, The Netherlands and Western Canada. Tracking her course through personal and ancestral landscapes, Elrick creates a poetry of encounter—present, immediate and richly described.
